Material chest is a chest that always drops crafting materials or rarely recipes. You cannot get a recipe that you've already unlocked. You also cannot get multiple types of items and always get 4 of the same crafting material (without modifiers) or one recipe.
Locked gold chest
Material chest has a 20% to spawn locked. While locked, you have to use a key but in return, you also get a lot more crafting materials. Recipes are not affected by keys in any way and you can always get only 1 per chest.
Loot
The possible loot depends on the zone you're in. Every zone has its own possible crafting materials and recipes to give.
